PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need of considering the influence of mechanical vibration or the like associated with the relative movement of a spatial modulation pattern and to realize high-speed efficient observation in the case of projecting the spatial modulation pattern so that the sectioning image of a sample may be observed. SOLUTION: This optical device is provided with a light source device 1 whose light emitting intensity is changed hourly, the spatial modulation pattern 2, a projection optical system 3 projecting the pattern 2 to the sample 4, an image-formation optical system 5 forming the image of the sample 4 modulated by the pattern 2 as a modulated image, a phase control means 8 for controlling the relative spatial phase of the pattern 2 to the sample 4, an image pickup means 6 picking up plural modulated images whose spatial phases are respectively different in synchronization with the timewise change of the light emitting intensity of the device 1, and an image processing means 7 forming the image of the sample 4 from the plural modulated images picked up by the means 6.
