PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vernier-type encoder that can measure long length with high resolution and can easily measure an absolute value. SOLUTION: With the move of a traveling scale plate 10, four sinusoidal waves are detected by a traveling main scale 11 where a measurement range S has been divided into n portions and a traveling vernier 12 where the measurement range S has been divided into (n-1) portions and are subjected to operation. Then, by referring to a synthesized waveform, an absolute value is measured.
