A process for the reduction of the molecular weight of a polymeric material selected from ethylene-propylene (EPM) copolymer and ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) terpolymer and relative mixtures, comprising treatment of the polymeric material with at least one hydroperoxide, the hydroperoxide being present in such a quantity as to effect the molecular weight reduction. The ethylene/propylene copolymers have a molar content of propylene ranging from 16 % to 50 % and the temperature ranges from 80 oC to 250 oC.
