An applicator comprises separable application and protection elements molded as one piece in a foam material. The foam of the application element comprises particles that are released, for example upon contact with a surface to be treated and after removal of the protection element. Independent claims are included for: (a) manufacturing an applicator as above by injection molding. The particles are inserted into the foam after it has been injected and before it expands; (b) a machine for performing (a) has a device or injecting a foaming material into a mold in two stages and another device depositing the particles into the mold between the two injections of the foaming material; and (c) use of the applicator to apply a cosmetic, pharmaceutical or dermatological material to the skin, hair, lips or fingernails. Preferred Features: The protection element has a hemispherical reinforcement that encourages concentration of the particles adjacent a separation zone between the elements. The particles are 100 micro m - 1 mm in diameter.
