PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize, at low cost, fusion splicing of two optical fibers having a different mode field distribution. SOLUTION: In the two optical fibers 43, 46 for fusion splicing, selection is made so that the expansion rate of a mode field diameter is relatively increased by the heating of one of the optical fibers having a relatively smaller mode field diameter; after the fusion splicing of the two optical fibers, a section including the fusion splicing point is heated with a burner 48 for a prescribed time at a prescribed temperature; the heating is stopped when the mode field diameters are roughly in agreement between the end faces 42a, 44a of the fusion splicing of the two optical fibers; and the connecting loss of the two optical fibers is thereby reduced. |
