The storage medium includes a memory (3) for storing a file and fingerprint data for the person authorized to use the file. A fingerprint sensor (4) scans the fingerprint of a user. In a programming mode, a processing unit (2) activates an input-output interface circuit (5) so that the file and the fingerprint reference data are received from a data terminal (9) and stored in the memory. In a data retrieval mode, the received fingerprint data are compared with the reference data stored in the memory to check if the user is authorized to access the file stored on the data storage medium.
