A waste water treatment plant has a sedimenting basin with a permanently-installed sediment depth sensor coupled to an indicator positioned outside the basin The sensor is a float (2) which is lighter than sludge, but heavier than water and retained within an upright guide (1). The float is close to and magnetically coupled with a magnetic induction coil (7) which emits a signal when the float rises to or above a predetermined point. The float incorporates some magnetic material. The guide has a magnet (6) near the top which attracts and holds the float when the float comes within close range. The sedimenting basin further has an optical sensor measuring the turbidity of water discharged. Sensor signals are transmitted to a monitoring service station by telemetry.
