The fluorescent lamp has a gas-filled glass envelope (2) into which 2 electrode leads (4) are inserted, provided with a metallised layer (6) having electrical contacts for acting as a heating resistance, on its inside or outside surface, e.g. in the form of an elongate band extending along the length of the glass envelope. An Independent claim for an operating method for a fluorescent lamp is also included.
