A covering or cladding comprises base panels (10) provided with engagement members and covering tiles (20) provided with engagement members engageable with the engagement members of the base panels. The base panels can be applied to a wall or a framework structure and the tile elements are applied on the base elements. The engagement means on the base elements and on the tiles are preferably alternating dovetail grooves and strips or the like and the tiles are made to slide into position on the panel one against the other starting from one end of the panel. Tiled covering can be obtained easily and rapidly with no need to use adhesives. Moreover the tile elements are interchangeable on the same base.
