PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide excellent viewing angle characteristics and to realize an excellent liquid crystal alignment direction and a stable and uniform pretilt angle in a liquid crystal display element manufactured with liquid crystal alignment treatment utilizing polarized ultraviolet rays. SOLUTION: Ultraviolet ray sensitive liquid crystal alignment layers are formed on the opposite surfaces of a pair of transparent substrates constituting a liquid crystal cell. Then for the purpose of controlling the aligning direction of the liquid crystal, the liquid crystal alignment layers on the transparent substrates in parallel with a reference plane are irradiated with the polarized ultraviolet rays divided per pixel or dot unit. Furthermore, for the purpose of realizing the pretilt angle, the transparent substrates which are irradiated with the polarized ultraviolet rays in the step b are rotated on the reference plane so as to be oriented in a direction different from the direction in the step b and subsequently are irradiated with the polarized ultraviolet rays divided per pixel or dot unit. |
