The device has a holder (3) fastened to the vehicle (1) and a coupling element (4) on the trailer (2), to be fitted into the holder. A distance measuring unit detects any deviations between relative positions of holder and coupling element, and supplies the detected information to a display (9) located within sight of the vehicle driver. The unit measures horizontal sideward deviations, and relative distance. It has a transmitter into the area of the holder, and a receiver in the coupling element area. The appliance is esp. for use with a combine harvester/cutter trailer combination.
