A lithium nickel copper composite oxide having the compositional formula Li2Ni1-XCuXO2 (0.0 < X < 1.0), which has the novel structure and enables to form a novel positive electrode active material having larger capacity than conventional ones, and further to provide the secondary battery having large capacity by combination of this novel positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material made from a carbon material or the like.
