The engine has a turbocharger (2) with an exhaust gas turbine (3) and a compressor (5), providing compressed charging air for the engine. An additional air driven turbine (28) coupled to the compressor is supplied with combustion air via an adjustable blocking element (13), with its inlet supplied from a point upstream of the compressor and its outlet coupled to the engine air intake line (6) downstream of the compressor. A control and regulating device (16) provides a setting signal for the blocking element, so that the intake to the compressor is reduced and the air is diverted to the air driven turbine, in the lower load range of the engine. An Independent claim for an operating method for a turbocharged IC engine is also included.
