Imidazoles of the formula I <IMAGE> or of one of its acid addition salts, in which X denotes oxygen or NH and Y denotes bromine, fluorine, iodine, -NO2, -OR, -CO2R, -CONR<1>R<2> or -SO2NR<1>R<2>, or, if X is NH, Y may also represent Cl, CN or alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R denotes an alkyl group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and R<1> and R<2>, which may be identical or different, denote hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, have a pesticidal action. The compounds of the formula I are prepared by the processes indicated in Patent Claims 9 to 13. The stated compounds and their acid addition salts are suitable for the control of arthropods, e.g. acarids.
