PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an orthogonal conveying device capable of conveying a document without catching the document by a tension roller when conveying the document orthogonally, with a simple conveying mechanism. SOLUTION: This orthogonal conveying device has a lower guide member 20 for supporting the paper to be conveyed from a lower side. A lower conveying means for conveying the paper along a feeding-in direction is upwardly projected by the lower guide member 20. A tension roller 32 is mounted for guiding the paper along the feeding-in direction while pressing the paper to the lower conveying means in a downward energized state. A roller height control means 33 controls the tension roller 32 not to be lowered from a height keeping a paper moving clearance with respect to the lower guide member 20.
