PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide rubber compositions which gives excellent adhesion at the interface with metallic materials by direct crosslinking bonding method without conducting surface treatment of the metallic materials such as adhesive coating and plating treatment, composite materials, and a method of making the composite materials. SOLUTION: A rubber composition comprises a rubber, a crosslinking agent and a specific organonickel salt. A composite material is obtained by direct crosslinking bonding of the rubber composition to a metallic material composed of a metal having an ionization tendency of greater than that of nickel or an alloy containing the metal. A method of making a composite material comprises heating the rubber composition and a metallic material composed of a metal having an ionization tendency of greater than that of nickel or an alloy containing the metal in contact to effect direct crosslinking boding.
