PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently ensure dehydrating functions while enabling the cost and the man-hour of assembly to be reduced by simplifying an internal structure of a suction roll and decreasing the number of parts in relation to the suction roll, a papermaking machine and a method of a vacuum suction by the suction roll. SOLUTION: This suction roll 50 has a roll cell 51 having plural through-holes 51a and formed so as to be rotatable and a fixed member 52 fixed on the inside of the roll cell 51. The fixed member 52 is arranged so that the one end 52a thereof is adjacent to the inner peripheral surface of the roll cell 51 and the surface on the side of the roll cell 51 connecting to the one end 52a is composed so that a gap formed between the inner peripheral surface of the roll cell 51 and the surface on the side of the roll cell 51 is gradually increased to the downstream side in the roll rotational direction.
