PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve thermal conductivity of the portion, on which a high mechanical load is applied, of a cylinder head and to properly prevent the generation and growth of a crack at the portion. SOLUTION: In a method to modify the surface of a cylinder head 3 made of an aluminum alloy of which a combustion chamber in a cylinder head consists in coordination with a piston, a recessed part 34a formed in the surface of the cylinder head 3 is filled with a pure aluminum metal 34 having an aluminum content higher than that of the aluminum alloy. Preferably, the recessed part 34a is filled by overlaying. Further, a substance having an aluminum content of 97.00-99.99 wt.% is used as the pure aluminum metal.
