PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent method for producing an oxothiazolidinecarboxylic acid and/or cysteine. SOLUTION: This method for producing an oxothiazolidinecarboxylic acid and/or cysteine comprises subjecting N-carbamoylcysteine to a ring closure reaction and/or a hydrolysis reaction by suing water in a supercritical state or subcritical state as a solvent. The method for producing an oxothiazolidinecarboxylic acid or cysteine from N-carbamoylcysteine comprises, in the method of the production, setting a reaction time in a time period to show a high formation ratio of an oxothiazolidinecarboxylic acid or cysteine and to cause a small amount of by-product.
