PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a laminar crystalline alkali metal silicate capable of bringing enhanced water softening performance, improved builder characteristics and reduced formation of residues. SOLUTION: This laminar crystalline alkali metal silicate is expressed by the formula: aM12O.bEO2.cX2O5.dZO3.SiO2NeH2O [M11 is an alkali metal, E is an element in the fourth main family of the periodic table, X is an element of fifth main family of the periodic table, Z is an element of the sixth main family in the periodic table and the following relations are satisfied: 0.25<=a<=6.25, 2.5×10-4<=b<=5.63, 0<=c<=2.81, 0<=d<=5.63 and 0<=e<=15.3].
