Addn. of a C2-10 aliph. alc. to form a homogeneous mixt. with the filtrate from a coal solubilization process coagulates the suspended fine particles of ash and insol. arom. compds. and facilitates their removal by std. procedures such as filtration or centrifugation. The solubilization is carried out in the presence of H and/or CO2 and the sepn. of coagulated particles from coal liqs. by filtration. The solubilized coal liq. is treated with 0.05-15 wt. % isopropanol, butanol, sec-butanol, and tert-butanol. Coal liqs. contg. 23 wt. % ash and 2 wt. % hydroaroms. are treated at 38-371oC with alc. and are filtered after standing 0.5-180 min.
