PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that prevents an entire screen from getting dark while correcting smear. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is composed of a CCD image pickup element 5, a smear detection section 8-1 that detects a DC smear component superimposed on an image pickup signal from the CCD image pickup element and a smear correction section 8-2 that corrects the image pickup signal based on the smear component detected by the smear detection section. The smear correction section executes smear correction based on the smear component detected by the smear detection section and variably sets an effective gain with respect to the object component of the image pickup signal in response to the level of the detected smear component.
