摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To melt a cold iron source, not raising the temperature of molten metal excessively, without lowering the quantity of charged heat of a supply electric power or the like even in a period when the amount of the molten metal in a melting chamber is small, on the occasion of preheating and melting the cold iron source continuously by using a shaft type preheating chamber connected directly to the melting chamber. SOLUTION: In the method for melting a cold iron source 26 in arc melting equipment 1 which has a melting chamber 3 equipped with electrodes 8 and 9 for generating an arc, a shaft type preheating chamber 4 connected directly to the upper side of the melting chamber and a cold iron source charging device 14 for the melting chamber, the cold iron source is charged directly in the melting chamber by the cold iron source charging device and the cold iron source in the melting chamber is melted with the arc 29, while the cold iron source is charged in the preheating chamber continuously or intermittently so as to maintain a state wherein the cold iron source is present in the preheating chamber and the melting chamber in continuity. Charging of the cold iron source from the cold iron source charging device is stopped at the time point when a prescribe amount of molten metal 27 is collected in the melting chamber, and then, the temperature of the molten metal in the melting chamber being raised, the molten metal is cast in the state wherein the cold iron source is present in the preheating chamber and the melting chamber in continuity.</p>
