PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projector. SOLUTION: Illumination light made incident on a declination prism 9 is totally reflected from a reflection surface RT and mirror-reflected by a reflection surface RM thereafter. Besides, it is transmitted through the reflection surface RT and emitted from the prism 9. That means, an illumination optical path is bent upward at an obtuse angle by two reflection surfaces RT and RM in the prism 9. Then, the illumination light is optically modulated by being reflected by a DMD 7 and the modulated light is made incident on a projection optical system 8. Thus, a display picture is formed on a surface to be projected.
