Treatment of aqueous liquid effluent comprises: (a) subjecting to sieving to remove organic matter and give a concentrate of dry materials content at least 15 wt.%; (b) tangentially microfiltering the liquid to give a liquid with reduced suspended materials content and a retentate; (c) evaporating the liquid to give a distillate and a concentrate containing at least 10 wt.% dry materials; and (d) mixing the concentrate of step (a), the retentate of step (b) and the concentrate of step (c).
