PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent video special effect device that can not only change the luminance or the like of an afterimage but also change the shape of the after image into various patterns so as to extend the variations of the afterimage effect. SOLUTION: The video image special effect device is provided with 4 pattern generators 13-0-13-3 that generate patterns of the same shape but of different sizes. Some of corresponding pattern generators 13-0-13-3 generate pattern video image and key signals of the video images in response to pattern number PN generated on the basis of a key signal KSC and a selector 14 superimposes them to generate an afterimage pattern video image (afterimage pattern signal TPS and an afterimage key signal TKS). Since the video image special effect device can change the luminance or the like of the afterimage but also change the shape of the afterimage into various patterns, the device can extend the variations of the afterimage effect furthermore. Thus, the video image special effect device with an excellent characteristic can be realized.
