The hydraulic tensioner (1), especially for an i.c. engine transmission chain (7), consists of a housing (2) with a cylindrical cavity (3) forming a high-pressure chamber for a hollow sliding piston (5). The radial outer surface (5a) of the piston has a series of alternating collars (10) and grooves (11), produced by machining, while the nominal clearance (J) between the piston and cavity wall is greater than 0.1 mm. The base of the housing cavity is equipped with an elastic plate (12) which acts as a non-return valve covering a pressure fluid feed port (4).
