PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the possibility of occurrence of a leak accident from a penetration part of a valve shaft in a butterfly valve, and to improve its maintainability. SOLUTION: In this valve, one end of a circular valve element 21 housed in a valve casing 1 is provided with a valve shaft 24 rotating together with the valve element 21 such that the valve shaft 24 penetrates the valve casing 1 and projects outside the valve casing 1. One of the other end of the valve element 21 and a portion of the valve casing 1 corresponding to the other end of the valve element 21 is formed with a recessed part 46, while the other is formed with projecting parts 42, 45 fitting in the recessed part 46 such that the recessed part 46 and the projecting parts 42, 45 are relatively rotatable.
