An inverse emulsion is obtained by emulsification then polymerization of one or more unsaturated ethylenic monomers using an azocarboxylic acid as radical initiator. The preparation of a water-in-oil emulsion of polymers in an organic phase comprises using an emulsifying agent, then polymerization using one or more initiator(s) of general formula (I). R1, R2, R3 and R4 = optionally identical, 1-9C, preferably 1-4C alkyl (optionally substituted by OH, 1-6C alkoxy or halogen), 3-12C cycloalkyl (optionally substituted by 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy, OH or halogen, aralkyl or aryl (optionally substituted by 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy, OH or halogen), where at least one of R1-R2 and R3-R4 may form an aliphatic ring; and R'' and R' = optionally identical, 1-10C aliphatic, preferably 1-4C. An Independent claim is also included for the emulsions obtained.
