PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device that can prevent a fact that an engaging device for setting a predetermined change gear state cannot be engaged by fail from occurring, and does not require addition of new valves. SOLUTION: This fail safe device of an automatic transmission adjusts an inputted oil pressure to an oil pressure corresponding to a pressure adjusting level, outputs it to engaging devices C1, C2 and includes control valves 50, 70 for exhausting pressure following the pressure adjustment. The fail safe device includes changeover means 30, 60 for communicating places where pressure is exhausted in the control valves 50, 70 when the inputted hydraulic pressure is adjusted to generate a fail that supply to the engaging devices C1, C2 is not allowed to a predetermined hydraulic pressure supply portion.
