PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the coercive force and S-N ratio of a magnetic recording medium with a soft magnetic film between the nonmagnetic substrate and a recording magnetic film and to attain a high recording density. SOLUTION: Then a soft magnetic film 3 and a Co-based magnetic film 5 are successively formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 to obtain a magnetic recording medium, a Cr-based nonmagnetic film 2 or NiAl is formed between the nonmagnetic substrate 1 and the soft magnetic film 3.
