PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method by which a defect in the welding mechanism of a printer is easily detected. SOLUTION: For example, the device for detecting the defect on the surface of the image medium is provided in an imaging system including at least the surface of one image medium. This device is equipped with a scanning mechanism suitably constituted so that a signal corresponding to the state of the surface of the image medium may be generated. A processor is also installed. The processor is connected to the scanning mechanism so that it can be operated and constituted suitably for receiving and interpreting the signal from the scanning mechanism.
