PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the wear resistance of a magnetic head when the signals are read by a helical scan system and also to improve the reliability of a recording/reproducing device itself in a prescribed using environment range. SOLUTION: An MR head 1 includes an MR element 5 which is held between the 1st and 2nd substrates 2 and 8 via the upper and lower shielding thin films 3 and 7 and upper and lower gap films 4 and 6. The substrates 2 and 8 are made primarily ofα-Fe2O3. A magnetic tape device 41 includes such heads 1 which are mounted on a rotary drum 44b constructing a drum 44 as the reproducing heads RH1 and RH2.
