PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer dispersion liquid crystal display element having high versatility and capable of time division driving and multi-character display by lowering a driving voltage, aγvalue and the temperature dependence of these electro-optical characteristics. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having a structure wherein a composite material wherein a nematic liquid crystal containing a compound having an electric dipole moment which do not coincide with a direction of a long axis of a molecule except a nematic liquid crystal material and a non- ionic surfactant is dispersed in a water soluble polymer medium is interposed between two sheets of substrates having transparent electrodes, a compound having a fluoroalkyl group, a polyethylene oxide group and an aromatic ring is used as the non-ionic surfactant.
