PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner and a method for detecting presence of page on the image scanner that can detect a presence of a page on a platen of a flat bed type scanner at a low cost without making the scanner complicated. SOLUTION: The image scanner 10 includes a trasnparent platen 28 to support a page 43 during scanning, an automatic document feeder 14 and detectors 18, 46 that detect the page 43 in existence on the platen 28. The detectors 18, 46 have marks placed on a prescribed area on the platen. In order to decide that the page is in existence on the platen, a prescribed area 60 is scanned. When the mark can be detected, it is assumed that the page 43 is not inexistence on the platen 28. When no mark is detected, it is assumed that the page 43 is in existence on the platen 28 and a user is informed of it.
