The folding seat (20) for a motor vehicle has a movable rail (30) sliding on a fixed rail (32) and carrying the seat assembly (40). A lock (50) connects the fixed and movable rails for movement between locked and released positions. The seat assembly has a squab (60) on the movable rail to allow folding forwardly and a backrest (62) mounted on the squab and can pivot around an axis to form a seating or load support surface. The backrest is sprung toward the latter position.
