Safety apparatus for protecting living creatures from the effects of accumulated combustion products (such as carbon monoxide and/or smoke) in an enclosed or confined space comprising a combustion product detector (4), a combustion product extractor (6), and a n audio or visual alarm (8). The extractor (6) may be an extracts on fan, which is activated i n response to detection of combustion products by the detector, and which moves the combustion products from the space within which the combustion products have been detected to th e external atmosphere so that the combustion products may disperse. The extractor, when actuated, may operate for a predetermined period of time, for example thirty minutes, or i t may operate until the detector no longer detects the combustion products.
