PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk device to be constituted into a thin type and a carriage control method of surely stopping a carriage at the innermost peripheral/the outermost peripheral positions. SOLUTION: In the disk device which is provided with a traverse motor 5 having a gear part 4 and an encoder 6, a lead screw shaft 3 having a spiral shaped groove and a carriage 1 having a rack 2, an objective lens and an objective lens supporting means, a cycle measuring means 10 for measuring a cycle of a rotation detecting signal from the encoder 6 is provided, and the traverse motor 5 is stopped when the speed ratio of the maximum moving speed to the minimum moving speed of the moving speed calculated from the measured cycle exceeds the preset reference value.
