PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating optical device having an enhanced light using efficiency while attaining the miniaturization of the device by contriving the arrangement of a control lens, and to provide a projection type display device using the illuminating optical device. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a light condensing means 31 for condensing the light emitted from a light source 30, a 1st lens array plate 32 for dividing the light incident from the light condensing means 31 into many luminous fluxes, a 2nd lens array plate 33 on which the light from the plate 32 is made incident, and the lens 37 for controlling so that an optical distance z2 between an image forming means 40 and the plate 33 may be made shorter than a physical distance z2 between the means 40 and the plate 33. Then, the optical path length for illumination is controlled to be optically short while securing the physical distance for securing the arrangement space for optical components, then, the light using efficiency is enhanced while attaining the miniaturization of the device.
