PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas lighter which can be extinguished forcibly even upon occurrence of such a trouble as gas jet can not be interrupted after use. SOLUTION: The gas lighter comprises a set button 7 operating simultaneously with an operating button 6, and a burner cap 8 normally urged by a return rubber 18 to be held at a position covering a jet nozzle and pushed by a tapered face 7c upon depressing the set button 7 to move to the left and right thus exposing the jet nozzle. When the lighter is used, the burner cap 8 is opened by depressing the operating button 6 and the set button 7 with a finger to expose the jet nozzle and then gas is jetted and fired. The finger is released after use and gas jet is interrupted through automatic reset of the operating button 6. When gas jet is not interrupted due to some cause, the burner cap 8 is urged to close by the return rubber 18 and applied over the jet nozzle thus extinguishing the lighter.
