PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semitransmission reflection type or reflection type liquid crystal device with improved color reproducibility while preventing fracture or deterioration of aluminum used for a semitransmission reflection film or a metal film of a reflection electrode by an easy process. SOLUTION: In a dark environment, light emitting from a fluorescent tube 301 is guided by a light guide plate 302 to enter a liquid crystal panel, passed through a polarizing plate 114, a phase difference plate 113 and a semitransmission reflection electrode 102, colored by a color filter 104 and introduced into a liquid crystal layer 50. The light introduced into the liquid crystal layer 50 is then passed successively through a phase difference plate 213 and a polarizing plate 214 to exit to the observation side of the liquid crystal panel. In a bright environment, the light entering from the observation side is passed through the polarizing plate 214 and the liquid crystal layer 50, colored by the color filter 104 and reflected by the semitransmission reflection electrode 102 to exit again to the observation side.
