PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head which causes no chipping, etc., of a substrate serving as a guard member and is suitably used as a reproducing head of a helical scan system. SOLUTION: The touching width with respect to a magnetic tape is prescribed via the grooves 9 and 10 which are formed at both end parts set in the width direction of a tape sliding surface 11 and along the length direction of the surface 11. At the same time, the widths W1 and 2 of a lower layer shielding thin film 3 and an upper layer shielding thin film 7 are prescribed at the side of the surface 11.
