PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To flexibly use a storage area while carrying out efficient data transfer even if a free area where a file transferred from a transfer device is written can not be secured as a continuous area on a recording medium. SOLUTION: The transfer device notifies a recorder of file identification information and transfers data to a recording and reproducing device according to file request information which is reported from the recording and reproducing device and specifies the data constituting the file. Here, if the free area where the file transferred from the transfer device is written can not be secured as the continuous area on the recording medium on the recording and reproducing device, the transfer device divides the file into data of arbitrary length corresponding to dispersed free areas and transfers them, and manages the dispersedly recorded data as one file.
