The response system is designed to be carried by a vehicle and use din conjunction with protective armour, an attack detector and a unit for transmission, analysis and launching a response. It comprises at least one single or double launcher (1) operating in one direction or two different, e.g. opposite directions, and firing metal bars (2, 4, 5, 6, 7) e.g. of steel, light alloy, titanium alloy, or a heavy alloy such as a tungsten alloy. The bars can be square, rectangular, circular or polygonal in section, with a sectional dimension close to that of the incoming shell or missile, and they are launched by explosive (3) or electromagnetically. Bars launched in different directions can be separated by a metal or elastomer layer (15).
