PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the luminous efficiency of the gas discharge lamp with capacitive excitation structure. SOLUTION: In a gas discharge lamp (1) equipped with a gas discharge vessel (2) filled with a gas at pressure (p) and at least one capacitive excitation structure (3), the capacitive excitation structure (3) is formed with a dielectric electrode (8) surrounding a hollow space with surface area A and volume V that is connected to the gas discharge vessel (2) and satisfies the relationship p.V/A<10 cmTorr.
