When conducting searches of mass-data stores, in order to avoid the lack of clarity which results when using blocks compiled from the data elements and particularly with large amounts of data, simple and efficient searching within the data records can be conducted by initially reading in a search-word (1) which indicates the content of the data records to be searched. At least two search-keys are then generated from the search word and compared with the data keys of the data records (4) by determining the interval/spacing between the search- and data-key. The data records (5) whose data keys have a smaller spacing, compared with one of the search-keys, than a given spacing value, are then outputted
