A shock absorbing lanyard (12) having an integral fall arrest energy absorbe r formed in a one-piece woven, knitted or braided construction wherein partial ly oriented yarn ("POY") fibers (36) and high modulus yarn fibers (34) are combined integrally in one section and are separated in another section in which the high modulus yarn fibers (34) preferably form a sheath (22) around a core of POY fibers (36).
