At each set AM frequency the reception quality at the actually set AM frequency is determined and the field strength at the neighboring frequencies determined. If a field strength is detected at the neighboring frequencies, they are considered for determining the total reception quality. The reception quality is reduced by one interference value, followed by comparison of total reception quality with a top reception quality value. On exceeding the latter, the tuning of the AM broadcast receiver is stopped and the receiver set at the AM frequency with sufficient total reception quality.
