A communication system includes a host device (20) and a plurality of peripheral node interface circuits (PNIs) (22) coupled to the shared communicatin link (16). The host device transmits and receives digital information over the link (16) using a plurality of first communication channels. Each PNI is associated with a particular first communication channel and receives or transmits digital information from or to the host device over the first channel. A device (18) may be coupled to each PNI for receiving or transmitting analog information from or to the PNI.
