The pump unit has at least one hydraulic pump (110a) with inlet and outlet channels and contained in a pump housing (120) having an opening. A centre part (130) connected to the pump housing so that the opening of the pump housing can be closed, forms a pair of inlet and outlet channels whose first ends connect to the channels of the pump and whose second ends opening to the outside of the centre part. Hydraulic work fluid is delivered into the centre part through an end of a loading channel whose other end opens to the outside of the centre part. The pump housing and centre part form a connecting duct between the inlet/outlet channels and the end of the loading channel. A hydraulic fluid supply valve controls the flow of fluid from the loading channel to the inlet/outlet channels whilst preventing opposite flow. This supply valve can be inserted through the surface of the centre part or centre section adjoining the pump housing.
